Customer service outsourcing in Mexico costs a fraction of a US in-house team: in the Talentosy Salary Index, a junior customer service rep in Mexico has a median base of $19,000 MXN a month (≈ $1,050 USD), about $12,600 USD a year, against a US median of $44,770 for customer service representatives. Six in ten Mexican customer service roles (60.3%) already require English. You can buy the service from a contact-center vendor, hire through an employer of record, or build your own team; the right model depends on how much control you need over hiring, training and quality. USD figures use 18.13 MXN/USD (ECB reference rate, September 30, 2026).

A customer service rep in Mexico costs a median base of $19,000 MXN a month at junior level, $38,750 MXN at mid-level and $66,250 MXN at senior level, according to the Talentosy Salary Index for customer service and customer success roles:
| Level | Typical role | Monthly median | Share of roles |

Base salary is not total cost. Mexican payroll adds IMSS social security, a 15-day aguinaldo bonus, vacation premium and profit sharing, which our breakdown of IMSS, aguinaldo and payroll costs puts at roughly 1.25 to 1.35 times base. That takes a junior bilingual rep to about $15,700 to $17,000 USD a year, still well under the US median of $44,770 ($21.53 an hour) reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for customer service representatives (May 2025).
Is English a bottleneck for customer service in Mexico?
English is less of a bottleneck in Mexican customer service than in other functions: 60.3% of customer service roles in the Talentosy Salary Index require English and another 31.7% list it as a plus. The bilingual premium at this level is modest, a median of $22,250 MXN (≈ $1,250 USD) for roles that require English versus $19,500 MXN (≈ $1,100 USD) for roles that don't. Test spoken English with a live mock call during interviews rather than relying on certificates.

Which model should you use: vendor, EOR or your own team?
The model for customer service in Mexico should follow how much control you need. Since the April 2021 reform, article 12 of Mexico's Federal Labor Law prohibits supplying workers to benefit another company; article 13 only allows subcontracting specialized services that are not the client's core activity, and only through contractors registered with the Labor Ministry (the REPSE registry, renewed every three years under article 15). Article 14 makes the client jointly liable if the contractor fails its workers.
- Contact-center vendor (BPO): the vendor employs the agents and sells you a service. Fastest to launch; least control over who is hired and how they are trained. If you contract through a Mexican entity, ask for the vendor's REPSE registration.
- Employer of record (EOR): the EOR is the legal employer and runs payroll, while you choose and manage the agents. A fit when you want control without opening an entity; compare options in how to hire in Mexico without an entity.
- Your own Mexican entity: full control and the lowest cost per seat at scale, with setup and compliance overhead.
- Recruiter-led hiring: under article 12, recruiters can source and select candidates without becoming the employer, so you keep the agents on your own payroll or your EOR's.
What will the 40-hour work week change for contact centers?
Mexico's 40-hour work week raises the cost of covering each seat, because contact centers are among the operations still running 48-hour schedules. The weekly cap falls to 46 hours in 2027 and 40 in 2030 with no pay cuts allowed, so covering the same hours takes about 1.2 agents per seat by 2030. At the $19,000 MXN junior median, one regular hour rises from $92.36 MXN (≈ $5.10 USD) at 48 hours to $110.83 MXN (≈ $6.10 USD) at 40 hours, still under a third of the US hourly median. The full timeline and overtime rules are in our guide to Mexico's 40-hour work week.
